Why
We Should Learn Idiomatic Expressions Language is one of the highest forms of human expression we posses. We speak by uttering sounds and write by making marks on paper. With these grunts and markings we are able to communicate simple and somewhat complicated ideas. Communication is not always easy. We can take definitions from a dictionary and construct basic sentences but sometimes we need to take words or groups of words and extend their meanings beyond their literal significance. Thus, we have the creation of idiomatic expressions or idioms. Idiomatic expressions have existed since the beginning of language. Daily we use idioms that are hundreds of years old. At the same time, many expressions used in the past are not used today. As our lives proceed we need new expressions to reflect the changing world we live in. New ideas in science, technology, economics or politics demand new words and phrases. Language is a never-ending process of transition using old words and creating new words that reflect the present world we live in. For the student of English as a second language, the use of idiomatic
expressions reflects progress from a basic level of English into an advanced
level. Grammar becomes more flexible and words mold into new situations.
Through idiomatic expressions, we see more deeply into a culture that
is represented through language. Words and sentences go beyond their rigid
literal meanings and develop a new spirit and purpose. Copyright, Terry Bates, 2007
